PLIPDECO finesse for operations
Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Corporation (PLIPDECO) has added three new port cranes to its equipment fleet, bringing it closer to its goal of being the dominant port in the region. KCI Konecranes VLC Corporation, a Finnish-based firm was awarded the contract to supply the state-of-the-art RTGs (Rubber-Tyre Gantries) complete with an auto-steering and auto-positioning system, at a cost of US$4,274million. Raouf Y Ali, vice president, Operations, Port and Estate at PLIPDECO, said the RTGs are intended to increase the efficiency with which the port handles containers in the yard. The RTGs will also allow PLIPDECO to optimise yard space through the creation of high-density storage. Another benefit is their ability to facilitate the easy retrieval of containers, said the company’s newsletter. Port customers — shippers, truckers and consignees — all stand to gain from the introduction of the new technology. This year, PLIPDECO has projected to handle over 140,000 TEUs of containerised cargo. With the construction of Berth 6, PLIPDECO plans to increase its capacity by 260,000 TEUs per annum. The corporation is therefore looking at a net per annum figure of 410,000 TEUs in the near future. All these infrastructural developments will mean better service delivery for customers, the company said.
