Beenhakker starts Warriors camp in Florida

A ten-member group arrived at the Sunrise Hilton Hotel, Fort Lauderdale, Miami from Trinidad early yesterday and was joined by five US-based players for an one hour training session.

The 15-man group are undergoing a live-in camp at the hotel until Monday. And ex-national captain Anthony Rougier who last represented the Warriors in February last, a 2-1 defeat by the United States, vowed to give it his all to earn a recall.

He turned down an opportunity for a trial with English Premier-ship club West Ham United in order to get a chance to play in the World Cup with the Soca Warriors.

The ten players from Trinidad are Aurtis Whitley, Anthony Wolfe, Atiba Charles, Cyd Gray, Jan Michael Williams, Silvio Spann, Kerry Baptiste, Nigel Henry, Errol McFarlane and Rougier.

They were joined by Anthony Noreiga, Osei Telesford, Daryl Roberts, Kevon Neaves and Julius James.

"An opportunity came for me to have a trial meant to commenced from tomorrow (today). I spoke to Mr Been-hakker and he advised that I should come here (to Miami) and get myself fit, and rightly at the end of the day, it has to be the right decision for myself and family, "said Rougier.

The utility player is hoping for a recall to the team ahead of the international against Iceland on Carnival Tuesday (February 28) and the Warriors opening World Cup match against Sweden on June 10.

Rougier said, however, the coach made it clear he is not going to select players whom he doesn’t think he needs. "You have to play for your position," he said.

"I am definitely looking forward to the challenge. It’s a chance to find a purpose in my football career again, and I intend to do whatever it takes to be one of the 23 players going to the World Cup," Rougier said.

Coach Beenhakker has lined up two training matches at the weekend against Florida Inter-national University and a local Honduran-based team.
