Why Christians do not celebrate Carnival
THE EDITOR: I make reference to Christians as those who have been born-again and as a result have decided to follow Jesus Christ on the basis of His Word, and not on the teachings of a particular church, religion or cult. Carnival was introduced by the French Planters and celebrated by the white upper and middle class. In 1834, it was taken over by the blacks, with the abolition of slavery. Carnival is the most vivid expression of worldly wisdom. God’s Word teaches us that the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. Carnival is earthly, sensual and demonic. The sights and sound of Carnival are usually vulgar and obscene. Nakedness, lewdness and profanity become the norm, as revellers indulge in unrestrained freedom. The Bible with reference to Romans 13:13 God admonishes us to behave decently, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery. The celebration of Carnival is an impediment to nation building as it is disruptive. It disrupts the whole rhythm of national life. It is unproductive and expensive. Multiply the man-hours of all working people by 16. This would be equal to a very high economic loss. There is a high social cost that is associated with the celebration of Carnival as well. Lives are ruined through an increase in the rate of accidents and the spread of AIDS and families are destroyed through a lifestyle of permissiveness. The Government makes a large investment in the celebration of Carnival, which continues to racially divide our nation. The revenue netted by the State is unable to compensate for the social, economic and spiritual destruction, which the celebration of Carnival brings to our nation. God’s Word makes a clear distinction between being rich and being blessed. It is quite clear that the spirit of Carnival is contrary to the Spirt of Christ. The greatest of all sins is not to be conscious of sin, ie when people suppress the voice of their conscience to the extent of not being able to recognise the difference between good and evil. Whatever positives one may derive from Carnival if any, who does it glorify? Certainly not God. The only antidote for man’s sin is the blood of Jesus, not ashes. Ashes may work for some skin disorders. You may not know that Jesus is all you need, until Jesus is all you’ve got. REX MAHADEO Marabella
