The one-eyed king
THE EDITOR: There is an old saying that, "There are some people who given an inch will take a yard" or a metre if you prefer to go metric. Patrick Manning seems to fit squarely into that category except for the fact that he not only wants to take one yard but a whole hog as well. The Prime Minister’s residence which has served all the previous holders of that office adequately and comfortably for the past 50 years, has suddenly become too small and cramped for his Lordship Patrick, even though he had the kitchen rebuilt and refurbished while previously in office. He also had a gymnasium built and outfitted for his personal use some years ago during a previous term of office, although if we are to judge by appearances has not produced the desired results. We have been informed that the present multi-million dollar mansion is to be totally demolished to make way for a much larger and elaborate structure where he can entertain a large gatherings at taxpayer’s expense. We have also been told that he has appropriated a section of the Botanical Gardens which has been fenced off to be included in the PM’s private grounds. Now he is seeking to appropriate an adjoining parcel of land that has been used for sporting events of many kinds since the 1930s and is the only venue in the St Ann’s Cascade area available to the residents as well as the hundreds of participants that have used it over the past several decades. We keep hearing from time to time that "Cabinet" has approved this and that but the truth is that the members of cabinet who were all appointed by Manning in person are merely a bundle of "Yes" men or women and that cabinet decisions are de facto the decisions of none other than Manning. From every indication, the majority of his subjects even though deprived and depressed seem to like it so. As another old saying goes "In the kingdom of the blind a one-eyed man can be king."
