Surrendering national appeal
THE EDITOR: As a white supporter of the UNC, I have faced on countless occasions fire and brimstone for aligning myself to an "Indian" party. In spite of my constant defence of the UNC as a national party, it seems Mr Panday has in fact decided that the UNC must return to its original moorings as a party for East Indians, run by East Indians, for only the benefit of East Indians. With the firing of Robin Montano, the only white Member of Parliament in the UNC, actually the only visible white member of the party, Mr Panday has committed the final act of surrendering his national appeal. Now the only man left with a truly national appeal is Winston Dookeran. I will wait to see what happens next before I leave the party and return to the party my family once supported — the PNM.
