DPP orders inquest in Cedros stabbing

The young man was detained by police shortly after the stabbing on Saturday.

Witnesses told police that Merez, a caretaker at the Cedros District Health Centre, got into a fight with the suspect outside the Ranch Bar at Icacos Village, Cedros, at about 8 pm on Saturday.

Merez began pelting bottles at the suspect who ran into his nearby home. Merez chased after the suspect and was subsequently stabbed in his chest while standing on the front steps of the suspect’s home.

Villagers rushed Merez to the Point Fortin Area Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

An autopsy revealed that Merez died from shock and haemorrhage due to a stab wound to the left side of his chest.

Insp Donald Denoon of the South Homicide Bureau is continuing investigations.
