Smith prevails in Catch tennis final

Smith was an easy 6-3, 6-2 winner over Liam Gomez yesterday.

Graeme Jones needed three sets to edge Leon Fraser 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the Boys’ Under-16 final, Javier Lewis eased past Keegan De Silva 6-3, 6-0 in the Boys’ Under-14 final while Akeil Duke spanked Christian Attong 6-3, 6-3 in the Boys’ Under-12 decider.

The Boys’ Under-10 final takes place today, with Joshua Abraham facing Chay Easton, after Abraham crushed Nathan Hart 8-1 and Easton defeated Jabari Lewis 8-3 in yesterday’s “semis”.

Nalini Maharaj hammered Nicolette Leacock 6-1, 6-1 in the Girls’ Under-14 clincher while, in the Girls’ 10-12 final, Taphenes Koroma got the better of Kaeleigh De Silva 7-5, 6-1.

And, in the Girls’ Under-18 doubles final, the unrelated Mohammeds Carlista and Shenelle blanked Dayna Grazette and Jeneice Ward 6-3, 6-4.

Semifinal matches yesterday saw Leacock and Maharaj teaming up to defeat Samantha Cruikshank and Shontelle Yearwood 6-0, 6-3 in the Girls’ 14-16 doubles. Leacock and Maharaj will meet Trevene Sellier and Shanel Singh for the trophy today.

In the Boys’ Under-14 doubles, Seve Day and Jabrille Kabli will face off against Javier Lewis and Vaughn Wilson. Day and Kabli mauled Jeremy Braithwaite and Fernando Valdez 6-1, 6-1 while Lewis and Wilson crushed Keegan De Silva and Kyle Delzin 6-2, 6-1.

In the Boys’ 10-12 doubles, Jualon Greig and Timothy Trestrail are expected to meet Adrian De Silva and Akeil Duke. Greig and Trestrail defeated Jabari Lewis and Elan Mendes 8-3 while De Silva and Duke whipped Ty and Joshua Abraham by a similar scoreline.

Other finals carded to take place today are the Girls’ Under-18 singles battle between Carlista Mohammed and Raye Ann Sandy and the Boys’ Under-18 doubles clash between Smith and Bevon Burris against Gomez and Dawoud Kabli.

Matches will serve off at noon, with the prize-giving ceremony scheduled for 4 pm.

Sandy got past Dayna Grazette in a marathon encounter 6-3, 6-7 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) in one semi-final on Thursday while Mohammed overcame Jeneice Ward 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) in the other “semi”.

Shirell Henry claimed the Girls 15-16 title, after getting past Shirayne Williams 6-4, 6-3.

In the Boys 15-16 semi-final Graeme Jones whipped Shiv Rambarran 6-1, 6-2 yesterday while Leon Fraser cruised past Nathan Martin 6-2, 6-2.

In the Boys’ and Girls’ 13-14 “semis”, Javier Lewis strolled past Kyle Delzin 6-0, 6-2 while Keegan De Silva defeated Vaughn Wilson 6-0, 6-4.

In the girls section, Nicolette Leacock blanked Keneel Teasdale 6-3, 6-2 while Nalini Maharaj beat Shontelle Yearwood 6-1, 6-3.
