Govt ‘saddened’ by Panday’s jailing
Noting the verdict was unprecedented in Trinidad and Tobago’s history and in the history of the Commonwealth Caribbean, Robinson-Regis stated it confirmed the supremacy of the rule of law in this country, “for it proves the law applies to all citizens in equal measure.”
“The fact that the investigations were continued across administrations, speaks volumes for the administration of justice in Trinidad and Tobago,” she stated.
Meanwhile, UNC Political Leader Winston Dookeran described the matter as “a tragedy, not only for Panday and his family,” but for, “every member of the UNC” and the national community.
“My heart goes out to Mr Panday, to his wife and his daughters at this time of great distress. Whatever the eventual outcome of this still ongoing legal process, which now moves to the appellate court, Mr Panday’s enduring contributions to social justice for the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago can never be diminished,” he stated.
UNC MP Manohar Ramsaran said while he and Panday had their differences of opinion, he never had a personal battle with Panday. “I feel sympathy for Panday and I wish this could have ended differently,” he said.
