Water woes hit south schools

Around 11.15 am yesterday, principal of the San Fernando Senior Comprehensive School Vishnu Dass, dismissed classes because of the water shortage.

A source at the school told Newsday that for the second day in a row, the school’s taps and water tanks were dry because of lack of water supply after the Easter holidays.

The source added that the school’s toilet facilities were also in a very unsanitary state because of the water shortage.

San Fernando Boy’s R C School principal Michael Guerra, told Newsday that he was forced to called WASA because the water pressure is very low. Guerra said the eight water tanks at the school and the toilets located on the second floor were not receiving any water.

Water was also delivered to the San Fernando Boys’ Government School, after the school’s principal reported to WASA that the low water pressure was unable to reach the school’s toilet facilities.

Contacted yesterday Ministry of Education communications specialist Mervyn Critchlow said that principals have to liaise with school supervisors and manage what is happening at their school.

And in an unrelated school issue, classes at Rosary Boys RC and the St Rose’s Girls RC were suspended yesterday because of an infestation of roaches at the schools.

The Ministry of Education announced yesterday that classes at both schools will resume on Monday. The suspension of classes is to facilitate spraying of the schools’ compound.

A meeting will be held this morning at the Rosary Boys’ RC to further discuss the problem.
