Tobago cops suspect foul play

THE BODY of a woman was found completely burnt in a car which was parked approximately fifty feet off the Claude Noel Higway in a car-park at the new Mt Pleasant Credit Union housing development in Bacolet, early yesterday morning.

About 1.45 am, a watchman at the site office reportedly was alerted by a ‘buzzing sound’ followed by a loud explosion.

Upon investigating the noises, he saw the car on fire,. The burnt out wreckage was identified by Licensing officers as a Nissan Wingroad station wagon. When firemen arrived on the scene and doused the flames, they got a shock when they found the corpse on the floor between the front and back seat.

Police sources told Newsday that based on a missing person report which they received yesterday they believe the woman may be that of a Tobago woman in her early thirties, who was reported missing.

Sources added that the incident did not appear to be an act of suicide and based on the position in which the body was found, they strongly believe foul play was involved. Officers said they are keeping an open mind in their investigations and are working on several theories including that of a love affair “gone fatally sour.”

It is believed that she may have been dead before the explosion since there were no visible signs of a struggle to escape although the body appeared not to have been bonded.

Licensing officers conducted a check on the vehicle’s chassis to determine the ownership and by yesterday afternoon, a senior police official informed Newsday that a person was assisting the police in their investigations. Once an official identification is made, a forensic autopsy will be carried out to officially ascertain cause of death and whether or not, foul play was responsible for the victim’s death. Detectives from the Scarborough CID are continuing investigations.
