Judge rules, man not mad

After reviewing the psychiatric report submitted by Dr Hazel Othello, who is attached to the Psychiatric Hospital, Justice Rajendra Narine ruled there was nothing mentally wrong with 25-year-old Gavindra Ramnarine Maharaj and ordered that he be discharged with immediate effect.

The writ of habeas corpus against the Director of the Psychiatric Hospital was filed on May 8.

Maharaj of Aranjuez Main Road, San Juan was committed to the hospital for assessment and report on May 1, by Magistrate Anna Ryan. He was scheduled to reappear before Ryan on May 15.

According to the contents of the writ, Maharaj — a father of one — appeared before Ryan at the Tunapuna Magistrates’ Court following domestic violence proceedings instituted against him by the mother of his child.
