Maha Sabha presses for Hinn ban

This despite the fact that both the Prime Minister and Minister of National Security have notified the Maha Sabha that “they are unable to stop him because he is a missionary coming for three days.”

In an interview, Maharaj said he will continue to sensitise the population. He is asking the Commissioner of Police to arrest Hinn if he broke the law by pretending to cure people. Maharaj said under Chapter 18:01 of the Immigration Act, Hinn can be deported.

On Monday night, President of the Inter-religious Organi-sation (IRO) Rev Cyril Paul spoke to Maharaj and indicated that the IRO wanted to have “guidelines” for Hinn during his visit. However, Maharaj said he was sticking to his position that Hinn should not be allowed in TT.

Asked if he was concerned about Hindus going to Hinn’s crusade and being converted to the Pentecostal faith, Maharaj said for 162 years people have been trying to convert Hindus, but they still form one quarter of the TT population.

He said the Pentecostal movement had “flattened out and was losing momentum and followers” and Hinn was returning to TT — six years later — to win more converts.

He said the Maha Sabha was not taking legal action but expected the Commissioner of Police to do so.

Rev Paul said he spoke to Maharaj and Pastor Winston Cuffie about organising a meeting but no date was set.

He said he would “ follow up” the issue.
