TT needs ALCOA as a hole in the head
The PM allegedly remarked: that: “There will be a smelter in Cap-de-Ville, whether it’s generally accepted or not”— a display of flagrant abuse of power. Does he really mean this? I shudder to think, that — “imminent domain” has taken hold in TT. TT already has a chemical complex in Pt Lisas and a multi-million monstrosity — the LNG in Pt Fortin. In a country of just about 1.3 million people and with a size of just over 1900 square miles, where is our grandiosity taking us? We have already displaced the people of Pt Fortin, residing in close proximity to the LNG.
We did the same to the residents of Union Estate. Now it’s the people of Cap-de-Ville that are earmarked for dislocation. When will this disruption of people’s lives stop? What would it take for the Government to come to its senses? At times, activities are mistaken for productivity and progress. Only this time, we are on a tread-mill to imminent disaster.
Who needs ALCOA when we already have — the Pitch Lake, one of the natural wonders of the world, underutilised as a national tourist attraction and its asphalt fossil, the world’s best roadway surface appliance not even expeditiously marketed. We should let Portia Simpson-Miller — the PM of Jamaica know that what is good for Jamaica, isn’t necessarily right for TT; even if our PM Patrick Manning concurs with her.
