Mother’s Day mayhem

MOTHER’S DAY preparations for three families ended abruptly yesterday, when two men were killed in a vehicular accident on the Solomon Hochoy Highway, and another was stabbed to death in a separate incident in Sangre Chiquito.

In the first incident late Saturday night, plans for a Mother’s Day celebration with her 11 children came to a tragic end for a Sangre Chiquito mother yesterday, when she learnt of the murder of her son.

Simon George, 46, a former soldier of the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment and a former employee of the Forestry Division, was stabbed to death by a Guaico woman yesterday.

Camille George told Newsday her son had come home for lunch just an hour before the incident.

“All my children for the past few years were separated and for the first time we were together. Simon bought me a Mother’s Day gift and Wednesday, which will be my birthday, I will get a better gift,” Camille cried.

The bereaved mother said George asked her to make a cup of tea, and she asked, “why you can’t make it yourself?”

George said, “Mom, you can make my tea nicer.”

He then took a shower, dressed, told Camille she would enjoy her Mother’s Day, and left the house.

Camille screamed with grief as she recalled the events before George’s murder.

George’s brother, Francis George, said he heard of the incident and ran to his brother’s side before he died.

“My brother was still breathing and I called the EHS and no one came for three hours after,” he said.

According to police reports, George was returning to a variety store in Sangre Grande at 7 pm on Saturday night after purchasing a soft drink for the proprietress. When he arrived at the variety store, he saw the proprietress and the suspect in a heated argument. George intervened and told the woman to leave. A shoving match started between George and the suspect.

The suspect then left the store and returned to the variety store 15 minutes later. She reportedly removed a knife from her handbag and stabbed George in the left side of the chest. George held onto his chest and pursued the suspect outside of the building. He then collapsed on the Eastern Main Road near Bargain Store at the Sangre Grande Roundabout.

The suspect is in police custody. Sgt Stanley Ramdeen of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations visited the scene. The crime scene created a traffic jam in Sangre Grande.

Early yesterday morning, Jason Singh 23, of Sunshine Avenue, Calcutta Number 2, and Claude Chatoor, 45, of Old Southern Main Road, Mc Bean Couva, were killed instantly as they were returning home after attending a Mother’s Day concert at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya.

Passengers Piaree Siewdass, 41, sustained left leg and neck injuries, while her daughter Shivanna Siewdass, 22, is warded in a critical condition at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC).

The accident occurred at about 3 am near Seereeram Brothers Ltd.

According to a police report Singh, a father of two, was driving along the southbound lane of the highway, when he lost control of his purple Honda Integra, which ran off the road and crashed into an electricity pole.

The vehicle spilt in two on impact and both men were thrown from the vehicle.

Singh and Chatoor were killed instantly.

When Newsday visited the home of the bereaved families yesterday, grief-stricken mom Rajo Chatoor, 79, cried — “My son gone and leave me.”

Chatoor’s common-law wife, Sherry Khan, was too distraught to speak.

Singh’s brother, Ivan Chatoor, 56, said the family had planned to prepare a “special lunch” for Mom Chatoor.

“All of our plans for mommy have been squashed.

“We had planned to cook several different meals, but look what happened now.”

Recalling the accident, the victim’s sister Piaree said: “All I remember is that the car started to skid and began spinning around. I cannot remember anything else.”

Officers attached to the Chaguanas Police Station are conducting investigations.
