PoS subdued over TT loss
Prior to the start of the game, the streets of the capital were almost deserted and remained that way for a short while after England’s victory. When the reality of the situation finally sunk in, Warriors supporters decked in red, began trickling out of bars, racing pools, restaurants and wherever else the game was being shown.
Their long faces reflected the sombre mood as flags and bandanas remained in pockets and bags.
However, when questioned by Newsday, several revealed that while they were sad at the outcome, they were not disappointed in the team’s performance.
One patron of a racing pool described the game as “magnificent,” adding that the team’s ability to hold off England from scoring for 80 minutes was “genius.” “We just trailed in the last ten minutes,” the fan said.
Another man who watched the game at a restaurant on Independence Square said the team played an excellent game. It was just unfortunate that we had to go up against giants like England and Sweden, he added.
While the planned party atmosphere after the game did not materialise and disappointment was etched on most faces, supporters were still hopeful that the team could still make it to the second round.
Most said they were praying for a nil-nil draw in yesterday’s game between Sweden and Paraguay (which eventually ended 1-0 in favour of Sweden on a Freddie Ljunberg goal) because they were confident the Warriors would win against Paraguay next Tuesday.
