Warrior fever ‘infects’ priest
“Ole, ole, ole, ole,” Hudlin chanted in support of the Soca Warriors who went up against England in yesterday’s World Cup Group B match.
The church service began three and a half hours before the match which the national football team lost.
Hudlin told the congregation, many of them dressed in red, that there was power in their assembly. Special prayers were offered for the Soca Warriors.
He prayed: “May God help them during the match. May He have his way in guiding the footballers against England. God knows best.”
Hudlin said yesterday was not an ordinary day because the church was also celebrating the sacrament of the kingdom of God.
“We have to look into our lives. We have to gather as a community to offer the fruits of our land and our life — the work of the human hand has transformed hope which has broken, and we are responsible for releasing the power of God into the country,” Hudlin told worshippers.
Hudlin’s sermon was brief to allow worshippers to view the match at noon. Encouraging them to keep the faith, the priest advised: “Keep the prayers going and we shall have favour in the eyes of the Lord.”
After the church service Hudlin led hundreds of faithful Catholics in a procession which started from the church on Harris Promenade through the streets of San Fernando.
