‘Warriors’ need more strikers for Paraguay
But after dropping a 2-0 decision to the English, Trinidad and Tobago have one game left to make amends.
Now, there are calls for an all-out attack by the “Soca Warriors,” who have yet to score in the tournament, against Paraguay on Tuesday in Kaiserslautern.
Realistically, the “Soca Warriors” must score at least two goals against the South Americans to have a chance of advancing to the round of 16 following Sweden’s 1-0 win over Paraguay yesterday.
Clearly a different approach will have to be taken if the team is to advance to be the last round of 16. Ex-Strike Squad defender Brian Williams who is in Germany to support the “Soca Warriors”said there is a need now to employ the extra man up front on Tuesday.
He said although he was satisfied with the performance of the team in yesterday’s match, there was not that thrust offensively.
“To win matches internationally there is need to have that balance up front,” Williams said.
“Although we had Stern John and Kenwyne Jones in the striking position, there was not that cohesion between them and therefore we did not create the amount of chances we should have.”
Williams who now coaches Petrotrin, said goalscoring has to be a priority against Paraguay.
“We did take the right approach by not launching into an all-out attack in the early moments of the game,” Williams said. “But with Sweden beating the Paraguayans 1-0, then we will have to go with at least three strikers up front in the last game and hope that the Swedes and English match-up finishes in our favour.”
Angus Eve another ex-national captain who was active during the early stages of the 2005 World Cup qualifiers expressed the view that it can be an ideal time for coach Leo Beenhakker to use another player in the midfield who will join the attackers.
“Midfield general Russell Latapy could be the man to be used as a roamer and therefore strengthen our attacking force up front with the other two strikers” Eve said.
He congratulated Beenhakker’s approach to be defensive for most of the match and hope for the counter-attack, but says he felt the “Soca Warriors” may have given England too much respect.
Ulric “Buggy” Haynes a lethal striker during the 1970s for Trinidad and Tobago also feels there is need for the additional striker if we are to come away with three points in the encounter with Paraguay.
He too was high in praise for the performance of the team despite the 2-0 loss.
Haynes expressed the opinion that England’s goalscorer Peter Crouch fouled defender Brent Sancho in his attempt to score.
