South East batsmen blaze centuries

Action was in round two of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) Inter Zone competition.

In the match played at PowerGen Ground in Penal, Mohammed and James capitalised on a wicket which favoured batting. Mohammed displayed his trademark timing and elegance as he struck nine boundaries and five huge sixes on his way to scoring 151, the second highest score of this year’s tournament.

James was equally as destructive on the Tobago bowlers as he scored 148 which consisted of 13 boundaries and two sweetly struck sixes.

The two put on a partnership of 312 runs before Mohammed was run out with the pair pushing South East to a mammoth total of 335 in 50 overs. Batting second and facing the daunting victory target, Tobago found themselves in early trouble and were struggling on 77 for the loss of four wickets.

Timothy Surujbally was the main tormentor taking five wickets for 24 runs as he lead the charge for South East. He was ably assisted by West Indies Under-19 off spinner Rishi Bachan who took two wickets for 43 runs and Rakesh Ramkissoon, two wickets for 42 runs.

Tobago eventually surrendered and ended on 157 runs for the loss of nine wickets giving South East a comfortable victory. Jason Mohammed was declared the “Man of the Match” for his magnificent innings of 151.

In the other match at the Queen’s Park Oval, in Port-of-Spain, North batting first posted a challenging total of 226 runs off 42 overs against South. Merry Boy’s opening batsman Mario Belcon continued his rich vein of form as he scored a stroke filled 76. He was assisted by National Under-19 batsman Darren Bravo scoring 39 and former TT player Earnil Ryan with 39. South in their response were never in the match as they closed on 134 runs for the loss of six wickets from their 50 overs. Richard Harris was the pick of the North bowlers with two wickets for 33 runs as they completed a 92-run victory. At Inshan Ali Park, Preysal, it was a repeat of last year’s final and joint winners North East and Central Zone clashed. However, no play was possible and the match was abandoned due to a water-logged outfield.
