Police cricketers on exhibit

The exhibition is the Police Museum’s Sgt Sheila Prince’s project. Prince was on hand to discuss the clippings on display to members of the public.

One policeman highlighted was Ranjie Nanan, who made a name for himself at the international level. He was a right-hand batsman who bowled a right-arm offbreak that destroyed batsmen at the regional level of the game.

Nanan was the leading off spinner for Trinidad for almost two decades, and his best season was in 1981/82 when he took 32 Shell Shield wickets in five matches. When he retired, Nanan was the leading wicket-taker in the competition.

He was also a classy batsman, with a first-class hundred to his name. His one Test came in Pakistan at Faisalabad in 1980-81, where he took four wickets and impressed with his tight control. He also took two important catches.

In 1986, policeman and well-known cricketer Anthony Sampson was named Cricketer of the Year by the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board.

In 1984, the TT Police cricket team toured England with a line of top players and won a few matches. Among those who were on that the team were Anthony Sampson (captain), Joseph Darceuil (vice captain), Lennox Pamphille, Roland Sampson, Christopher Joshua, Godfrey Duncan, Keith Thomas, Mookesh Rampersad, Glen Hankey Torrel James, Christopher Lewis, Radcliffe Boxill, Ernest Quamina, Peter Joseph, Desmond Baptiste, Kenrick Swift, Felix Dennie, Derrick George, Robert Mahabir, Robert Neptune, Leroy James, Carver Folkes, Dexter Bobb, Errol Grant, Keith Jeffrey, and Errol Grant,
