U-23 ‘Warriors’ shut out Guyana 4-0
The Under-23s powered to a 4-0 half-time scoreline after Shane Calderon scored in as early as the second minute of Friday night’s game.
Calderon again finished clinically in the 9th to extend the lead to 2-0 over the Guyanese.
Before Guyana could really regain their bearings, Corneal Thomas made it 3-0 in the 22nd minute. And the young “Warriors” moved into a comfort zone with midfielder Simeon Augustus banging in the fourth to leave the Guyanese shell- shocked.
Guyana who came out of a training camp in Brazil with Trinidadian Jamaal Shabazz among their technical staff, gave an improved performance in the second session and prevented the young “Warriors” from adding to their four goals.
Goalkeeper Kevin Mussio made three brilliant saves inside 10 minutes of the re-start. But later the young “Warriors” defenders led by Radanfah Abu Bakr, Corneal Thomas, Larry Bacchus and Akil Edwards buckled down to their work and snuffed out the Guyana attackers.
Victory was a good tonic for midfielder Hayden Tinto who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Friday.
Coach Michael McComine was pleased with the showing of his team and said: “It was a pleasing win.
This is the first real competitive international game for this team so it’s always good to get this kind of start.”
He added: “It was a very business like approach but I felt we could have finished the game stronger.
“We still have two more games to go and we will play each game on its merit,” McComie said The under-23 “Warriors” next face Netherlands Antilles today from 3.30 pm.
The Antilleans were defeated 1-0 by Suriname in the second game of Friday’s double header.
