Manswell wins bout in US

The eight-round heavyweight boxing contest in Tampa, Florida, came on a night when there were two other cards being held simultaneously in Trinidad and Tobago.

The big Tobago-born fighter is being led by American professional boxing promoter Don King and is expected to feature in another bout soon.

Meanwhile at the Cosmic Boxing Gym in Marabella, Trinidad and Tobago’s Shawn Corbin stopped Guyana’s Leon Gilkes in an eight-round contest.

At the end of the clash Corbin earned the favour of the judges, winning 73-75, 80-75 and 80-73.

As expected he had the better of the contest, regularly connecting his opponents with a barage of punches to the head and body.

In another fight, staged by Ticos Promotions, debutant Richard Straker also went under in a unanimous decision to the experienced Nigel Edwards.

But Straker may feel comfort in that he was able to last the distance in a gruelling four-rounder.

The six-bout card was aimed towards development of the sport in Trinidad and Tobago by providing young upcoming boxers with an opportunity to fight.

Also on the card, Miguel Agard got the better of Mohammed Dawes of Jamaica in a six-round scrap.

The referee was forced to bring the match to a premature end as Dawes could not recover from a severe beating in the first round.

The referee stopped the bout at the start of the second round to give Agard the win.

In another big match-up Dexter Gonzales of Guyana clobbered Craig Storm in another six-round bout.

Storm, who had initially planned to fight on Female World Title card between Giselle Salandy and American Dakota Stone in Port-of-Spain on the same night lost by a TKO.

Storm was felled by a powerful right punch which sent him flat on the canvas in only the second round and he was unable to respond to the mandatory eight-count that followed.

And in the last contest of the night Joel Mc Crea of Guyana was also in winner’s row, beating Ian Blue in a four-round fight.

Mc Crea was a convincing winner as he left Blue totally confused following a series of right and left punches.
