Hurley grabs top Preysal award

The announcement was made during the presentation function of the club held at Gaston Court in Chaguanas on Wednesday night.

Hurley was selected from amongst five cricketers vying for the tittle including Azeemul Haniff, Shazan Babwah, Steven Katwaroo, Kjorn Ottley.

Receiving an award for working with the community to develop cricket in Preysal Village over the years was former school principal Zahir Baksh.

Also inducted into “Preysal Hall of Fame” was Eugene Antoine, who started playing cricket in 1989, and made his debut for the National Team in 1991.

Antoine also represented the WI “A” Team against Canada in 1994 and 1995 as well as playing against Bermuda and India at the Queens Park Oval.

The other inductee, Sheriff Mohammed, played for Preysal for 25 consecutive years, and was also captain of the club from 1996 to 1998.

Delivering the feature address on Wednesday was His Excellency Philip Kentwell, the Australian High Commissioner, who praised the village of Preysal for producing high calibre players over the years.

He said that Preysal had achieved their success through hard work, dedication and commitment, all ingredients necessary to climb the ladder of life.

“You here, like Australians, enjoy cricket passionately,” he stressed.

Kentwell said he was honoured to be invited to witness the 59th Annual Awards Ceremony of the club, which had an enviable record in the history of sports in Trinidad and Tobago.

“You are an institution with a prestigious history,” he pointed out, “having produced Test stars and outstanding players in regional tournaments.”

He advised young players to remember that “activities such as sports played a significant part in the developmental process in life’s journey.”

“Sports is uniquely transportable across many cultures,” he said and as such he urged youngsters to get involved in such activities.

Deryck Murray, president of the TTCB, said that Preysal’s success “is based on community involvement, which is an excellent factor to be considered in the process of nation-building.
