Bandits rob jewelry store owner
Two bandits posing as customers held up the managing director of Freya’s Jewelry Store located at Dulip Singh’s Plaza, Main Road, Chaguanas, on Thursday and robbed her of a quantity of jewelry value, $50,000.
Reports revealed that around 1 pm, Freya Baksh was at her businessplace when two men armed with guns held her and her husband, Roland Ramnarine, and ordered them to hand over the jewelry. The men then ran out of the shop and boarded a waiting car parked at Eleanor Street. Cpl Villafana and other officers of the Chaguanas CID went to the scene and carried out inquiries. Baksh told Newsday that yesterday’s robbery was the second in two years. She claimed that around 1 pm, she was in the store with her husband, an employee and some customers when two men entered and asked for a pair of earrings with initials “R”. Baksh added that she informed the men that she did not have any earrings with that initial and went about her duties. She claimed that one of the men pushed her against a counter and placed a gun to her head. His accomplice then ordered her husband to place a quantity of jewelry into bags. The men then ran out of the store. Ramnarine chased the bandits but witnesses shouted at him to stop.
Yesterday, Baksh told Newsday that while she is shaken up over the incident, she is not considering closing up business. Baksh, however, is concerned over the number of jewelry store robberies, especially in Central and at Valpark. She is considering beefing up security. Yesterday, operations resumed and it was business as usual.
