Call for Medical Audit

Former Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan has called on Health Minister Colm Imbert to introduce a “Medical Surgical/Clinical Audit” as practised in the UK. What is a Medical Audit? According to a Sunday Newsday research, a Medical Audit is the assessment by peer review of the medical care provided by the medical profession to the patient. A Clinical Audit is a multi-disciplinary assessment of the total care of patients by all health personnel. Auditing is intended to be a dynamic process, leading to improved patient care.

The principle functions of Audits are:
*to encourage the improvement of clinical practice
*educate all members of the clinical team
*raise the overall quality of clinical care
*enable the comparison of the provision and outcome of surgical care with current best practice
*provide peer comparison
During an Audit the medical professionals choose a topic, agree on certain standards, observe current practice, assess conformity to standards and intervene to promote change and observe practice again.
