ALTHOUGH former UNC Councillor for Longdenville Vijay Kalloo defected to the PNM last week, Chaguanas Mayor Orlando Nagessar is still convinced the ruling party “would see no seats in Central” in the upcoming Local Government elections. Commenting on Kalloo’s move to the ruling party, the mayor told Newsday that it came as no surprise to them. He added, “This was anticipated a long while ago. We were aware he was in consultation with the PNM some time now.” Nagessar said that recently Kalloo was known to have made the statement, ‘Is either I be a UNC Councillor or a PNM Alderman.’ He further accused Kalloo of betrayal and selfishness. The Chaguanas Mayor said, “It is very unfortunate that he could have betrayed the UNC.” He continued, “The party is bigger than the individual. You respect the party. You don’t go for self gratificaton. Defecting to the PNM means he is interested in himself, not the party.” Nagessar made the point that the final decision of choosing the representative is taken by the political leader. He said that proper procedures were followed and even before the eventual candidate was chosen all others agreed they would support whoever was selected.
The Chaguanas Mayor identified this as “a serious problem” that all parties may be faced with from time to time when one individual does not get his way. Prior to the final stage of choosing the candidate, Nagessar remembered that Kalloo like all other members made an “open promise” to support whoever was chosen. The Chaguanas Mayor went on to call these recent developments a “PNM plot.” He said, “They know they cannot win by the ballot, they are trying to buy over one or two of our candidates.” Kalloo, Nagessar added, intends to lure other UNC officials who win their respective seats and so he may become mayor. Such efforts Nagessar said would be strongly resisted, describing those efforts and a PNM win in Central as “wishful thinking.”
KINGSTON: Captain Brian Lara and his deputy Ramnaresh Sarwan blazed the West Indies to a convincing seven-wicket victory yesterday over Sri Lanka following a seven-wicket haul by Corey Collymore. The West Indies won the two-match Cable & Wireless series 1-0 just after tea on the third day of the decisive second cricket Test at Sabina Park. The two sides played to a draw in St Lucia last week. Left-hander Lara spanked nine fours and a six in an unbeaten 80 in 132 minutes. Sarwan decorated his superb 82 with 13 fours and a six off 110 deliveries in three hours, but was out with just one run needed. The pair added 161 for the third wicket in two hours after the home team slipped to 50 for two in pursuit of a target of 212. Fast bowler Collymore earlier laid the platform for the victory with a career-best seven for 57, which floored the visitors. Sri Lanka, resuming at 129 for five, was bowled out for 194 just before lunch. Collymore gained a crucial breakthrough in his second over as Sri Lanka captain Hashan Tillakaratne (seven) played all around one to be bowled comprehensively at 138 for six. All-rounders Kumar Dharmasena and Chaminda Vaas shared an enterprising stand of 35 for the seventh wicket to boost the Sri Lankan effort. But Collymore switched ends and was rewarded with immediate success.
Running in with the Blue Mountains at his back, the Barbadian induced an edge from Dharmasena which was snapped up by Lara at first slip. Dharmasena hit three fours in an important 20 off 40 balls. Three balls later, Collymore also claimed the dangerous Vaas for 21 off just 15 deliveries with four boundaries. This time, Lara dived forward at slip to pouch an excellent, low catch. The 25-year-old Collymore, in only his third Test, soon wiped away the rest of the lower order. Muttiah Muralitharan (six) spooned a catch to mid-on and Thilina Thushara (13) gave Lara a third catch at slip. Collymore’s figures, following his five-wicket haul in the first Test in St Lucia, were the best at Sabina Park by a West Indian. He earned both “Man of the Match” and “Man of the Series” honours. Vaas silenced a crowd of 10,000 with an early strike to claim Chris Gayle leg before for a duck early in the West Indies’ chase. Wavell Hinds and Sarwan revived the innings in a stand of 49 for the second wicket before Muralitharan arrived to further stall the home team’s progress. Left-hander Hinds was bowled for 29 as he tried to smack the ace off-spinner through the leg side. But the 34-year-old Lara joined his 23-year-old vice-captain and slowly tilted the balance back in their favor. They took tea at 120 for two and simply exploded after the break with a volley of boundaries. The pair smacked 92 runs off just 11.4 overs as the ground erupted with flag-waving fans and reggae music blaring from sound systems. Lara was dropped at long leg by Kumar Dharmasena when 61 off a top-edged hook from Vaas. But, by then, the result was hardly in doubt. Sarwan had the chance to hit the winning runs but slashed a catch to cover of Vaas with one needed. Lara then fittingly sealed the victory with a single off his great opponent Muralitharan, who took one for 48.

ST GEORGE’S: The West Indies named newcomers Indomatie Goordial and Felicia Cummings this weekend in a 14-member squad for next month’s Women’s World Cup qualifying cricket tournament in Holland. Goordial, a 17-year-old Guyanese allrounder, is an opener and off-spin bowler, and Trinidadian Cummings is a left-arm spinner. The selectors, noting the short time to prepare a team for the forthcoming international engagement, chose the bulk of players from the last West Indies squad that faced Sri Lanka in March. Wicket-keeper Stephanie Power, a 10-year veteran in the team, has been retained as captain, after leading Trinidad and Tobago to the league and knockout double in the West Indies Women’s Championship that ended on Saturday. Power, who represented the West Indies at the 1993 and 1997 World Cup tournaments, is one of five players from Trinidad and Tobago in the squad — the others being Cummings, Envis Williams, Nelly Williams and Shane De Silva.
The unit includes three teenagers —Goordial, the 19-year-old Vincentian opening bowler Clea Hoyte, and Guyana’s 17-year-old medium pacer Candacy Atkins. The other members of the squad are Grenada’s Debbie-Ann Lewis, St Lucians Nadine George, Doris Francis, Phillipa Thomas and Verena Felicien, and Juliana Nero of St Vincent. The coach is Trinidadian Ann Browne-John, the manager is Vincentian Cinda Bobb and Gus Logie is the technical adviser. The squad will assemble in Trinidad in a week’s time for a 10-day camp prior to their departure to Holland to participate in the International Women’s Cricket Council (IWCC) Tournament from July 19-29.

TORONTO, Canada: Barbadian jockey Patrick Husbands rode his fifth stakes winner of the 2003 Woodbine horse racing season when he guided hot favourite Maple Syrple to victory in the Clarendon Stakes on Saturday. Maple Syrple was the heavy 1/4 favourite in the CAN$166,500 event and scored by 3 1/2 lengths under Husbands to become the first filly to win the 5 1/2 furlong event in 21 years. The filly clocked a fast one minute 04.03 seconds, the second quickest time ever for the event after Tethra, who won in 1:03.60 in 1994. “It’s a great feeling sitting on her, she does what you want her to do,” Husbands said. “I’m just going to keep my fingers crossed that we’ll have more success with her,” added Husbands, who won last weekend’s prestigious CAN$1 million Queen’s Plate aboard the favourite Wando.
The win capped a fine day for Barbadian riders, with Husbands’ older brother Simon Husbands winning twice and Slade Callaghan also visiting the winners’ enclosure. Simon won the fifth aboard 7/1 chance Greattobeloved by 3/4 length, and the seventh by 1 1/4 lengths with My Sweet Tooch (3/1). Callagan prevailed in a terrific stretch duel to win the second aboard Mille Feville (9/5) by a nose over the 4/5 favourite Number One Cat, ridden by Robert Landry.
