TT athletes strike gold at Special Olympics

TRINIDAD and Tobago special athletes struck gold on opening day of the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Ireland.

Debra Ramnathsingh and Nisha Phillip both won gold medals in the 50-yard dash in their respective age groups. Phillip went on to add a silver medal in the Ball Throw event. Ramnathsingh got a fifth place ribbon in the same event. Both Ishman Perpignac and Clint Hoyte have made it to the final of the 100 metres. Yatendra Singh got a silver and Rodney Jack the bronze in the 3000 metres race. The volleyball and football teams were re-united with two of their players who were denied intransit visas by the US Embassy, and they quickly put the trauma behind them to play their part in the team’s two victories. The duo was forced to travel to Ireland via London instead. The footballers shut out Qatar 2-0 in their opener, then whipped the Netherlands 5-3.

The volleyballers ensured themselves of a medal after beating Chile 25-22 and Cuba 28-25 under the driving of coach Brenda Young, and despite going down 25-23 to Peru.To date, Trinidad and Tobago is the only team to beat Chile at the Games, and have a good chance of taking the gold in the event. Head of the Trinidad and Tobago delegation, Keith Huggins, expressed his sincere thanks to those who supported the contingent and  recognised the performance of the team “as they do us proud at the World Games.”
