Junior squash underway at Cascadia

MEMBERS of the junior national squash team will bid for honours in the Brimont Limited/Jackson Sports Junior Squash Championships.

The action is scheduled to serve off today and continue tomorrow and Monday at the Cascadia Squash Centre, St Ann’s from 9 am. There will be competition in 18 categories — Boys: Under-13; Under-15; Under-17; Under-19; and Open; Girls: Under-13; Under-15; Under-17; Under-19; and Open; Boys (Novices) Under 10 and under; Under-13; Under-15; Under-17; Girls (Novices) Under-13; Under-15; Under-17; Under-19. Over 100 junior squash exponents are expected to hit the courts, with the Novice categories being engaged in a round-robin series only. The Open division will also be contested on a round-robuin basis, with Stage Two on the final day Monday featuring quarter and semi-finals and final from 11 am.

Meanwhile, national player Dr Paul Jerome de Verteuil led QPCC Old Navy to an upset 4-1 victory over Petrotrin Stars on Wednesday to join them at the top of the “A” Division standings. De Verteuil whipped current national champion Colin Ramara who is ten years his junior 9-5, 9-5, 1-9, 9-3 in a torrid four-setter. While Ryan Jaggersar whipped Peter Pirtheesingh 9-7, 9-5, 9-7; Nasser Abdul downed Peter Ward 3-9, 9-1, 9-1, 9-1.  Brandon de Montrichard had a walkover on Roger Ache. John Holley was the only winner for the oilmen, beating Neil Galbaransingh 9-1, 9-0, 9-2. Other “A” Division scores: QPCC Hard Core beat Klub Squash 5-0; QPCC Old Navy defeated Klub Squash 5-0; QPCC Old Navy whipped QPCC Top Guns 4-1. “B” Division: QPCC Mix and Match beat Forest Reserve Drillers 4-1. Old Navy take on Hard Core and Pewtrotrin Stars meet Top Guns in semi-final action on Wednesday.
