One killed, four injured in Diamond Village car crash
A FAMILY reunion planned for this weekend has been put on hold after Barrackpore labourer, Basdeo Jhagmohan, was killed and four of his relatives injured in a car crash on the M2 Ring Road, Diamond Village, on Thursday evening. Jhagmohan, 49, died instantly in the accident, while those injured have been identified as his mother Mohanie, 68, daughter Marissa, 16, niece Samantha Singh, 16, and his sister Swarswatie Singh, 45. The elderly Mohanie was the most seriously hurt, having suffered major head injuries. Mohanie and Marissa remain warded at San Fernando General Hospital while the other victims were treated and discharged from hospital. Jhagmohan’s parents and two sisters flew in from Guyana and New York, for a family reunion which was planned for tomorrow.
But the celebratory mood was dampened earlier this week when Jhagmohan’s father suffered a stroke and was admitted to the SFGH. Police told Newsday that on Thursday evening, Jhagmohan of Gilbert Trace, was driving his family to the hospital to visit his father when tragedy struck. Police reports indicate that around 5 pm, Jhagmohan lost control of his Ford Laser which veered off the road and crashed into a concrete drain at the roadside. The four passengers in the car were rushed to hospital by Emergency Health Services ambulance, while Jhagmohan was pronounced dead on the scene by a district medical officer. An autopsy carried out yesterday by Dr Balliram at the San Fernando Mortuary concluded that Jhagmohan’s death was due to asphyxia. Jahgmohan’s wife, Ena, was too distraught to speak when approached by Newsday reporters yesterday at the SFGH. WPC Commissiong of the San Fernando Traffic Branch is investigating.
