Starlings crowned v-ball queens
Starlings pair of Nadiege Honore and Stephanie Woodroffe have turned the tables on their club mates Michelle Mohan and Pauline Woodroffe to snatch the Stag Maracas Beach Volleyball crown.
Playing in the final on Sunday at the picturesque Maracas Beach, Honore and Stephanie combined beautifully to deny the duo a second consecutive title in the three-phase Stag Spikedown Beach Volleyball series. They won 13-21, 21-13, 15-10 and took home the $1,200 first prize. Mohan and Pauline shared the $800 second prize. This was in the inaugural series organised by the Trinidad and Tobago Volleyball Federation and sponsored by Carib Brewery Limited, makers of Stag Beer. And while Honore and Stephanie celebrated their gains, it was the national pair of David Thomas (Technocrats) and Kevin Edwards (Glamorgan) who triumphed in the men’s category to take the “Stag Spikedown Maracas Kings” title. National stars Edwards (libero) and Thomas (outside hitter) had to pull out all stops to deny national senior setter Saleem Ali (Glamorgan) and former junior libero Abishay Kissoon (Starlings) in the final.
They emerged victorious by a 21-19, 11-21, 15-13 and pocketed the $1,200 first prize and Stag hampers which were presented by Stag Brand manager Govind Boodoosingh. Carib’s Public Relations assistant Arlene Francis, Stag assistant brand manager Ziska Maharaj, the TTVF president Mustaque Mohammed and tournament co-coordinator Daymien Stewart participated in the presentation ceremony while Carib’s Public Relations Manager Colin Murray witnessed the championships finals. Ali and Kissoon had to settle for $400 each. Shanna Ferreira (Challengers) and Elki Phillips (Point Fortin Slammers) picked up the third prize of $400 when they stopped Glamorgan’s stars Jenna Ferguson and Aisha Sealy 21-15, 21-15. Nolan Tash and Gideon Dixon (SEPOS) got the better of their clubmates A Davis and David Camacho 19-21, 21-14, 15-11 in the third place play-offs. Tash and his brother Dixon divided the $400 while Camacho and Davis did likewise. In the team category, Team Beers placed first and while Gargoyles and Puto Kings were second ($450) and third ($300) respectively.
