Jamaica beat TT by two runs in Red Stripe
KINGSTON, Jamaica: Jamaica eked out a two-run victory over Trinidad and Tobago in a thrilling Zone A Red Stripe Bowl match at Sabina Park here yesterday.
Sent in to bat by Trinidad and Tobago Jamaica recovered from 96 for six to total 210 for nine off their 50 overs. Scores: JAMAICA 210 for nine (50 overs). TRINIDAD & TOBAGO 208 (48.4 overs). The Jamaican recovery was due largely to West Indies rookies Dave Bernard (34) and Carlton Baugh (34), who rescued their team from embarrassment, as the Trinidad and Tobago bowlers ran through the top order batsmen. Bernard and Baugh added a vital 50 runs for the seventh wicket, lifting the Jamaica score from 96 for six to 146 for seven. Fast bowler Darren Powell contributed a useful unbeaten 22, while spinners Dave Mohamed took three wickets for 42 and Dinanath Ramnarine three for 47. Trinidad and Tobago were in trouble from the the start, losing opener Andy Jackson (0) with only nine runs on the board. But a belligerent ace batsman Brian Lara soon launched into the Jamaica attack and crashed three splendid boundaries before being bowled for 24.
Wickets fell regularly thereafter, before skipper Daren Ganga and Aneil Kanhai featured in a fifth wicket stand worth 57 runs which threatened to take Trinidad and Tobago to victory.
Kanhai fell for 39 with the Trinidad and Tobago total on 134, but Ganga, never flustered, mixed aggression with stolid defence and inched his team steadily towards the 211 runs required, together with the attacking Shazam Babwah. Babwah was out after scoring a well played 45, which included two towering sixes. Ganga left after scoring 71, and Trinidad and Tobago were still in the driver’s seat needing 16 runs from eight overs. But the tail failed to wag and when Ramnarine attempted a big hit and missed to be bowled with eight balls left, it was all over.
