Divali Nagar opens tonight
The 2003 Divali Nagar celebrations will start tonight, October 15 from 7.30 pm at the Nagar Site, Charlieville, Chaguanas. The chief guest for this year’s celebration is surgeon Professor Vijay Narayansingh. This year’s celebration marks the 17th anniversary of the Nagar. It will run from October 15 to 23.
Among the performers who will grace the stage on the opening night are: the Sandra Sookdeo Dance Company, Royal Bank Dragon Boys Tassa, members of the Hindu Prachaar Kendra, Dexter’s Ensemble, members of the Param Dhaam Ashram, Anuradha Maharaj, Reena Teelucksingh, and the Menocha Brothers. Master of ceremony for the opening night is the president of the Penal Rotary Surujdeo Mangaroo. One of the major highlights of the Nagar will be the troupe of dancers from the state of Rajastan, India who will be performing on Friday night on the main stage.The highly acclaimed dancing troupe known for doing traditional folk and classical dance is being sponsored by High Commissioner for India in Trinidad Varendra Gupta and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) of New Delhi, India.
Apart from the cultural show at Divali Nagar, patrons can look forward to a folk theatre featuring the local folk artistes doing songs, dances, poetry, skits, and drama. Sharma said that approximately 20 social and religious organisations from TT, will interact with visitors on a daily basis. The NCIC has also prepared a pictoral exhibition on this year’s theme of “The Child.” The Nagar is famous for the food-fair of East Indian vegetarian delicacies and non-Indian vegetarian foods and booths of many products. People from all walks of life are invited to the daily lighting of deyas. On the final night of the Nagar there will be a fireworks display presented by CLICO.
