The Trinidad and Tobago Volleyball Federation plans to lift the standard of beach volleyball players and officials.

Towards this end the Federation will host a special Beach Volleyball Course from November 3 to 8 conducted by Italian FIVB Instructor Maurizo Pimponi. According to TTVF’s president Mushtaque Mohammed, this course will cater for a maximum of 24 participants including coaches, players, administrators and officials. Mohammed said that the course will be staged at the Vessigny and Maracas Beaches between 8.30 am and 5 pm. Registration fee for the programme is $125. Deadline for submission of entries is October 22. Participants will receive a FIVB manual and FIVB tee shirt. Those desirous of participating are asked to submit their name, address, date of birth, phone number and e-mail address to the Volleyball Federation. Payment can be made to the TTVF through their Republic Bank account number 740503811501. A copy of the receipt should be sent to any executive member of the local federation.

Meanwhile, TT’s men and women’s teams did not fare well at the inaugural Discovery Coors Light NORCECA Beach Volleyball Championship, which concluded last Sunday in Puerto Rico. Nolan Tash and Sean Morrison won the first round encounter against Honduras pair of James Carltonwoods and Luis Alberto Baide 21-16, 14-21, 15-11. But they faltered in the next round and were edged out by Costa Ricans Marcelo Araya and Jonathan Guevara 15-21, 24-26 and Puerto Rico’s Juan Carlos Rivera and Abdel Otero 8-21 and 14-21. Otero and Rivera made it through to the quarterfinal by getting the better of Araya and Guevara at 21-15 and 22-20.  Puerto Rico’s number one rated pair of Ramon Hernandez and Raul Papaleo stopped compatriots Otero and Rivera at 21-13 and 21-16. Hernandez and Papaleo eventually took the first Discovery Coors Light NORCECA men’s beach volleyball title. They whipped Americans Adam Roberts and Matt Heath 21-13, 21-14 in the championship title match.

On the distaff side, TT’s KellyAnn Billingy and Stephanie Woodroffe, pairing for the first time in their short beach volleyball career, ended up losing their matches. In their first match, they lost to Puerto Rico’s number four rated pair of Suanette Morales and Sairy Cruz 10-21 and 15-21. Their fate was sealed when they were knocked out of the championship by the powerful American duo of Danalee Bragado and Lauren Frendrick who romped home easily at 5-21 and 7-21. The Americans took home the US $2,700 first prize when they overpowered Puerto Rico’s number two rated pair of Lyann Puig and Maria Theresa Esparza 21-12, 21-10 in the championship final. Apart from the United States of America, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Barbados, Guatemala, Aruba and Antigua/Barbuda were represented in the first edition of the beach championships.
