Four held for kidnapping

FOUR people were up to late yesterday assisting members of the Anti Kidnapping Squad with investigations into the recent kidnappings of Arima resident Kelvin Moorley and teenager Christopher Thackorie.

The four, from South, Central and Maraval, were held over the weekend by AKS members, but had not been charged up to late evening. Moorley, 47, of Riverway Road, Arima, and his wife, Tara, were both snatched by kidnappers last Thursday evening in front of their home, but Tara managed to escape. Her husband, however, was not so lucky and spent almost three days in captivity before he was released by his abductors Sunday morning in the vicinity of Ambassador Hotel, Long Circular Road, St James, AKS sources said. The Arima Discount Mart manager was discovered bound and gagged and his kidnappers had reduced their ransom figure to $3 million, down from $5 million. No money was paid, senior AKS sources told Newsday.

Young Thackorie, 14, was kidnapped on the evening of October 12 from outside his Purcell Street, Vistabella, home. His kidnappers had asked for $3 million, but the AKS said only a small portion was paid. The St Benedict’s College student was released three days later in the vicinity of a Chaguanas fast food outlet. AKS officers, under Sr Supt Gilbert Reyes, ASP Henry Millington and Insp Adam Joseph are investigating.
