Green Machine steamroll S/Juan

THE “GREEN MACHINE” St Augustine hammered San Juan 7-1 in their RBTT Intercol East Zone quarterfinal at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, Arima yesterday. And South Zone champs Naparima also advanced to the semis after a narrow 2-1 win over Presentation San Fernando at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella. Naps will oppose Pleasantville next Wednesday after their neighbours edged Fyzabad 1-0, courtesy of a Derron Matthews strike, in the other match of yesterday’s double-header at Marabella. Naps received an early scare when Lee Derwin put Pres in front after two minutes of play but levelled the scores in the 19th minute when midfielder Ancil Farrier headed home a Kezi Lara’s right-side centre past goalkeeper Mark Placide.

And Farrier netted the decider three minutes later, this time slamming home from a Javed Mohammed pass. Lara saw his 25th minute header rebound off the crossbar but the result was never in doubt. The Green Machine showed no mercy on their Bourg Mulatresse-based opponents, with two goals apiece from Lorenzo King and Terrence Williams while prolific striker Shane Calderon, Justin John-Baptiste and Marcus Ambrose adding one each. In the semifinals on Thursday, St Augustine will oppose Hillview, who got the better of Barataria 2-1 in the second match of yesterday’s doubleheader at Malabar. Two matches are slated for today at 4 pm with Roxborough expected to get the better of the winless Bishop’s at Shaw Park, Scarborough, Tobago while, at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Balmain, Couva, Union Claxton Bay will square off against Chaguanas Senior.
