Stings bite Pacers in national b-ball
POINT FORTIN Stings shocked the basketball fraternity when they wrested a 78-68 victory over Eastern Community Basketball League giants Unit Trust Maloney Pacers in a National Basketball Championships game at the Point Fortin Indoor Sports Arena. Coach Jackson Charles rallied his unbeaten Pacers, before the start of Wednesday night’s game, making it clear only a better prepared team would beat them, which later seemed the case. Stings began their offensive from the half-time interval where they went to the locker rooms tied 33-33 after trailing 18-13 at the end of the first quarter.
They began the final quarter period with a 50-49 lead, and Roger Lewis the eventual Player of the Game, poured in 22 points hauled down 10 rebounds and dished out three assists, Wilfred Benjamin had 12 points and seven rebounds and Irvin Phillip contributed 11 points and two rebounds to secure the victory. Derrick Boxhill scored a game high 25 points and had three rebounds, Miguel Williams had 10 points and eight rebounds and Wayne Springer put in nine points and two rebounds for Pacers. Cap-de-Ville Hoppers were awarded the night’s opening game when Sangre Grande All Stars failed to show for their scheduled game. The winners were also given 20 points. The action continues this weekend, when the venue switches to the St Paul Street Multi-Purpose Facility.
