Vessigny win 2-0 for semi-final spot

VESSIGNY moved into the South Zone RBTT Intercol semi-finals after a 2-0 shut-out of Mayaro in the first of back-to-back football matches at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella yesterday.

First Hughton Hector dribbled through the midfield and went past two defenders before hitting a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Clarence Bessor almost on the stroke of half  time. The Mayaro lads went in search of the equaliser and held off Vessigny until the 62nd minute. Seon Thomas made a clever diagonal run from the right before smashing a shot past Bessor.  The ball glanced off a post and into the net, and it was all over bar the shouting. Up to press time yesterday Benedict’s, with goals from Stefan Delas and Adrian Paul, were 2-1 up against Princes Town in the second match of yesterday’s doubleheader.

At the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, Arima, the “Dial Dynamos” Arima and St George’s both progressed to the East Zonal semis following victories over Toco and the “Blue Thunder” El Dorado respectively.
Arima, the defending Zonal champions, got a double from midfielder Kitwana Abosi as they whipped Toco 3-1. Abosi opened the scoring in the 33rd minute in fortuitous circumstances; his right-footed strike rebounded off the post and goalkeeper Jude Williams and trickled into the back of the net. The left-winger doubled Arima’s lead early in the second half, before Kevon White pulled back one for Toco in the 64th. But, under pouring rain, Arima were not going to be denied as ace striker Gorean “Mickey Rat” Highley sealed the victory in stoppage time, slotting home past the advancing Williams to give the Arimians a semifinal meeting against St George’s next Thursday. The “Blue Thunder” were held a comfortable 2-0 halftime lead against St George’s but their joy proved premature as the Barataria-based lads stormed back to prevail 3-2. Kareem Edwards must have felt that his work was done after scoring twice in first half but St George’s staged a successful comeback, with Jabari Lander, Yannick Pilgrim and Marlon White on target for the victors.
