Roddick win Lucozade team tennis

RODDICK RUNNERS clinched Group A of this year’s Lucozade Team Tennis Championships when they totalled 274 points.

With the Gouviea brothers, Jared and Jonathan, leading the way and Christian Bennett, Adam Talma, Blane Gomez and Jonathan Lancer all in winner’s row in singles action at the PSA Tennis Centre, Long Circular Road, yesterday, the Roddick Runners team scored 60 points to Team Henin’s 47. And when the doubles came around, Roddick Runners won four of the five matches for a total of 34 points to their opponents 24 for an overall 94-71 victory and take Group A of this year’s tournament.

Runners-up were Blake Blasters who beat Hewitt Hustlers 92-85 in a very close and exciting match. After taking the singles 7-3, the Blasters had to hold on for a 30-30 tie in the doubles matches but prevailed 94-71 and a total points tally of 267 points. Rain ruined the final match between Henin Heroes and Hewitt Hustlers but the teams conceded, since they were unable to overhaul the Runners. Hewitt Hustlers ended with 151 points and Henin Heroes 128. Group “B” will be completed on Saturday, as the downpour prevented any play yesterday.

In decisive matches, Clijsters Crushers take on Federer Flames, while Ferrero Fighters meet Agassi Acers. The four teams are tightly bunched, with Clijsters leading with 190 points followed by Federer on 161, Agassi 150 and Ferrero 148.
