East San Juan samba with ‘Jap’ Brown Trophy
SAMBA Xtra Malt East San Juan United danced all the way to their clubhouse with the Arthur “Jap” Brown Trophy when they were crowned new “Beasts of the East” in the Eastern Football Association.
It could have been a passing of the baton on Sunday afternoon at the Boundary Road Ground, San Juan, as The Samba Boys edged last year’s champs WASA Clean and White 1-0 on a goal by Anthony Pitman, which sent supporters into jump-up mode at the final whistle. East San Juan put themselves on an unassailable 53 points with still three more matches to play, including today’s against Police at the same venue. A fierce battle now rages for the runners-up prize. Three teams are in contention with Hearty Food Bulls on 39 points with three matches left, Carib FC 39 points and four matches to play and Crab Connection on 34 points with six matches left. The Crabs tested the waters with Athletico Sports Institute whom they face in the League Cup final on November 9. Kester St Cyr got a goal for Crab Connection, but Peter Rivers got the equaliser in a 1-1 draw at the Aranguez Savannah, San Juan.
Hearty Food Bulls crushed Delta Glass Young Hearts 7-0 at the Arima Municipal Stadium, with Simon Bernard, Anslem Coa and Kevin Daniel scoring two goals each. Calvin Charles netted the seventh. Joe Public maintained their fourth position with a narrow 1-0 triumph over TSTT at Squadron ground, Arouca. Shevon Noreiga scored the vital goal. And Carib FC, last season’s runners-up shut out bottom club BM Spurs 3-0 with Damien Pierre, Jonathan Walkes and Tennessee Ragoonath scoring a goal each. Police edged East/West Coaching School 2-1 on a Kevin Morasng double. Darnell Julien scored for the “schoolboys.” Today’s fixtures: WASA Clean and White vs Crab Connection, at WASA Ground; Samba Xtra Malt East San Juan United vs Police, at Boundary Road; Athletico Sports Institute vs TSTT, at Valsayn. Kick off is at 4 pm.
