Kelvin Williams named cricket coaching director

Former Trinidad and Tobago all-rounder Kelvin Williams has been made Director of Coaching at the Sir Frank Worrell Cricket Centre in Balmain Village, Couva.

This was revealed by national coaching director Baldath Mahabir on Friday night during the induction of the second class of students to enter the academy at the National Cricket Centre  (NCC). During the Carib Beer regional series earlier this season Williams assisted coach Phil Simmons. Meanwhile Corporate Communications Manager at PowerGen, Omar Khan has called on players to learn their cricket history and take an interest in the sport that would give them a wider knowledge of the game. Khan, manager of the senior national cricket team, was at the time delivering the feature address at the function.

“When Matthew Hayden broke Brian Lara’s record of 375 for the highest innings in a Test, Brian phoned me at 3.30 am in the morning. He told me that he wanted to get the phone number for Hayden. I was able to make a few calls and Brian was able to speak to Matthew. “Later that evening during our team meeting I threw out a challenge to the team asking them who were the three West Indians to have scored triple hundreds in Tests. I told them I would give them $1,000 Jamaican for a correct answer and they were unable to cash in,” said Khan. The answer was Brian Lara, Lawrence Rowe and Sir Gary Sobers. “This was not good as it showed that our players were not in tune with the history of the game in the Caribbean. I notice that West Indian cricket history is one of the topics to be covered this term at the Centre and I am imploring you all to take a serious note of this topic,” said Khan who is a chemical engineer. Khan also mentioned that discipline is needed for progress and told the players to take all that is offered to them and make good use of it. PowerGen are the sponsors of the academy and it is the second time they are sponsoring the programme.
