Red eye stops trial again

THE highly contagious eye infection called conjunctivitis, more commonly known as “red eye,” was once again the reason behind the adjournment of the trial into the 1997 murder of school teacher Albida Lopez, after the State’s witness was found to be suffering with the infection. When the matter was called yesterday, the court was informed that the witness could not proceed due to the infection. The matter was then adjourned to tomorrow. Two men — Cunupia resident Keino Lewis and Nicholas John of Kelly Village are before High Court Judge Prakash Moosai charged with Lopez’s murder. A third person was granted immunity from prosecution in exchange for his testimony. Lopez was shot and killed while sitting in the front passenger seat of her husband’s car, which was parked along Lyndon Street, Curepe, around 12.45 am on June 8, 1997. Attorneys Oscar King and Debra James are representing John, while Selwyn Mohammed and Owen Hinds Jr are representing Lewis. The State is being represented by attorneys Jerron Joseph and Alexander Prince.
