W Connection drub Surinamese 3-0

PARAMARIBO: Holders W Connection of Trinidad and Tobago completed a 3-0 triumph over FCS Nacional of Suriname before a crowd of 6,000 to get their CONCACAF Club Champ-ions Cup defence off to a bright start on Wednesday.

In other first leg, first round matches of the Caribbean Football Union zone, Jamaica’s Arnett Gardens ravaged Jong Colombia of the Netherlands Antilles 5-1 in Willemstad, Curacao, and Port-more United prevailed over CS Barber also from the Netherlands Antilles 1-0 in St Catherine, Jamaica. The return legs for all three series will take place on November 12. The series winners will join San Juan Jabloteh in the two-legged, semi-finals on November 26 and December 3 before the two semi-final winners battle for the CFU berth at a date to be determined. The Champions Cup breakdown of teams feature two sides each from Mexico and the United States, three from the Union of Central American Football and one from the CFU. At the Andre Kamperveen Stadium, an inspiring second half performance from W Connection saw them roll over Nacional after the score remained level 0-0 at half time.

Silvio Spann, who replaced Reynold Carrington after the W Connection captain sustained a knee injury during the first half, set up the first two goals for the TT side. Spann picked up the ball in the midfield, ran some distance, and slipped for Kendal Davis to score a left-footed shot in a one-on-one with the keeper in the 55th minute. Titus Elva scored the second goal in the 79th minute when Spann took control of the ball in the middle of the park, motored down the right flank and squared back for the St Lucian forward to nail. W Connection’s third goal came from Brazilian Gefferson Goulart a couple minutes later when Jose Luis Seabra crossed deep from the left over to the far post, where Elva headed back for Goulart coming through the middle to volley home.
