TT women down Suriname in Olympic qualifier

PARAMARIBO: Trinidad and Tobago are favoured to advance to the final round of the CONCACAF women’s Olympic qualification next year in Costa Rica after posting a 2-0 victory over hosts Suriname in the opening leg of their two-match series on Sunday.

After a scoreless first half, Trinidad and Tobago had some help with breaking the deadlock when Suriname’s Glenoor Wilson scored an own goal in the 79th minute. Tasha St Louis ensured there was to be no comeback story for the home team with a tally two minutes from time. The two teams will meet in the second leg tomorrow at the same venue. The winner of the series joins Canada, Haiti, the United States and Costa Rica in the final round of the CONCACAF women’s Olympic qualification from February 25 to March 7 next year in San Jose. The eight team final round playoff will qualify two nations to the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, next September.
