Abiadama first in Hip Hop Hooray
Abiadama Secondary School advanced ahead of St Augustine Senior Comprehenisve to take home the coveted first place team trophy and a $2,000 grant in the first ever Hip Hop Hooray Schools Championship at the Tacarigua Indoor Sporting Facility on Sunday.
The competition, hosted by the Trinidad and Tobago National Sport aerobic Champion-ship, gave the youngsters an opportunity to showcase their talent in hip hop dance for a chance to participate in the Senior National Championships and the International Hip Hop Championships in Miami next year. Despite the late start and minor hiccups with the groups’ musical accompaniment, the participating schools displayed unique skill and good team spirit. That came after seven weeks of dance workshops, perfecting dance routines and qualifying stages. Among the participating schools were St Augustine Girls’ High School, St Joseph College, St George’s College, Chaguanas Junior Secondary, Guaico Government Secondary, Bartaria Senior Comprehensive and Cunupia Government Secondary.
Dressed in royal blue track suits, and going by the name “Vitamin X” students of the Woodbrook-based school had the judges’ and crowd’s attention from their entrance on the floor with their original dance routines. “I was extremely happy to hear of their win and we at Abiadama are very proud,” said principal and retired university professor Helen Pyne-Timothy. “We are a very small school, however we are usually in winners’ row. We have always managed to come out on top.” The private school which houses 121 students has attained wins in the Schools’ Aerobics competition and other sporting events. Third place in the competition was secured by “The Sixers” from St George’s College. In the small groups category, “Juice” of St George’s College placed first, followed by “Born to be wild” of Chaguanas Junior Secondary (2nd), “Pax” of St Joseph College (3rd), and Guaico Government Secondary (4th). In the pairs category, “Dr Dre and Mini Me” of Barataria Senior Comprehensive snatched first place. St George’s College secured both second and third places.
