Chinese Association Pot Black Snooker cues off

CHINESE Association of Trinidad and Tobago will cue off their fourth annual Pot Black Snooker tournament sponsored by Mabel Foods on November 24.

According to Chinese Association official Mervyn Aqui the competition, which usually attracts the leading snookists in the country will run for approximately three and a half weeks. It will end in a gala get-together with the presentation of prizes and lots to eat and drink just before Christmas. “A hallmark of the Chinese Association tournament is the high level of comraderie among the participants,” said Aqui. Competitors will play for valuable prizes, hampers and cash at stake for the top five snookists.

Defending champion is Narine Gosine of the Triangle who has confirmed his participation to  defend his crown. He is expected to get his major challenge from Carl Christopher, Herman Araujo, Krish Bridgelal and top South Trinidad players Knolly Phipps, Terry Lane and Lloyd John. Of added interest will be the female competitors including Karen Scott, Debbie Dottin, Anne-Marie Vincent and Natalie Soo Hon. Aqui said yesterday special tribute will be paid to a friend of the Chinese Association, Alvin Daniel who although belongs to Petrotrin Club, is highly regarded by his Port-of-Spain colleagues.

Daniel is currently recuperating for a serious bout of food poisoning at the St James Infirmary. “He is progressing well after being paralysed from the neck down. He has gained some movement in his hands and legs and we have been visiting him regularly,” said Aqui.  A special collection will be made for Daniel during the tournament, he said. Persons intrested in playing in the Chinese Association Pot Black tournament will have to fork out a fee of $30. Matches start at 7 pm from Mondays to Fridays at the Chinese Association Hall in Port-of-Spain.
