Toco, Grande tie in East n-ball thriller
THERE were thrillers in the East zone of this year’s British Gas-sponsored Secondary Schools Netball League. Toco Composite and Sangre Grande Educational Institute played to a 23-23 tie at the Arima Public Courts yesterday. Goal-attack Aviann Archie was the heroine for the Grande Girls, scoring the goal to tie the match on the final whistle. The Grande girls led 5-3 at the end of the first quarter, but Toco took over to hold a three-goal lead at half-time of 11-8, and they were still ahead 17-14 at the end of the third period. But a raging battle followed in the final stanza as the teams traded goals before Toco surged ahead until Archie’s last second effort.
Archie ended with 12 goals from 23 attempts, Murlin Paul had nine goals and Lavaughn Cooper two for Grande, while Tracey Courtney had 13 goals, Ronalda Lovelace nine and Anika Mottley one for Toco. St Augustine Senior Comprehensive edged San Juan Secondary 18-17 in Wednesday’s “big game.” A last second score by Petal Wilkins who finished with 16 goals, won the match for the Green Machine girls. Crystal Alleyne added the other two, while Kimberly Charles netted 15 goals and Atoya Adams scored two for San Juan. Also on Wednesday, North Eastern College whipped Pentecostal Institute of Learning (PIL) 25-9. Shirland Gomez scored 19 goals and Riann Jones six for the winners, while Michalene Samerson got six and Curlene Griffith three for PIL. In North zone action, South East Port-of-Spain drubbed Bishop Anstey 23-2 in their Group X game at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex, but Diego Martin Junior Secondary got the points by default over Belmont. Diego Martin Secondary topped Malick 23-13 and St Joseph’s Convent downed St Martin’s High 20-16 in Group Y.
