Nine-year-old stars at Scalextric Championships
SHANIKA FERGUSON, a resident of Calder Hall, Scarborough, amassed 77.9 points to claim the Under-10 division at the Scalextric Formula One National Championships recently.
The Standard Three student of Scarborough Methodist School defeated fellow nine-year-old Romario Cupidore of Petit Valley by 0.1 of a point. But Ferguson and Cupidore will represent Trinidad and Tobago at the Scalextric International Competition in Guyana next August. Cupidore’s seven-year-old brother Vladimir was third in the Under-10s with 74.8 points while Katherine Lee-A-Ping placed fourth with 72.8 points. Ten-year-old Stephan Bissoondial from Arima recorded a perfect score of 80 points to cop the Under-15 category with elder brother Christopher, aged 12, placing second with 71 points. Kevin Lee-A-Ping, 10, of Santa Cruz finished a close third with 70.6 and 12-year-old Prem Sawh of Gasparillo was fourth with 68.2. The quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals in the Under-19 and seniors categories will be contested today at the Trincity Mall from 1 pm. Women and Over-35 races will also be staged on the day with registration for interested participants concluding at 1.15 pm.
