South East cricket get Third Division

SOUTH EAST Zonal Cricket Council will be including a Third Division when cricket in the zone bowls off on January 24, 2004. This was revealed to Newsday yesterday by zone chairman Azim Bassarath. “Due to the hard work that has been done in the zone to promote the game, we find that a lot of teams want to play cricket in the area. “In order to facilitate the increase in teams, we are going to put in place a third division that would adsorb the new teams. They cannot go into the second division as this would increase the number of matches and hence would take the season into the rainy part of the year.” “New teams will enter the Third Division and will compete with each other for  promotion into the Second Division and then onto the first. We are very happy with the fact that interest in the game has grown so much and we are really looking forward to getting even more teams in the near future.”

South East has been touted the best run zone in the country by former president of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) Alloy Lequay. Over the past few seasons they have been the front-runners as far as cricket development is concerned and continues to be the flagbearers. South Zone has been emerging as a force to be reckoned with under the leadership of Leo Doodnath, and the youth teams from South are now winning  titles on a regular basis. The Colonel Saunders South Under-15 cricket team have won the KFC Interzone Youth series for the past three years. Cricket in the zone will get underway next January at Yolande Pompey Park, with a Sunday league clash. Officials of the TTCB as well as the zone will be on hand to meet the players before the start of the game. The teams are yet to be decided. And the zone is scheduled to host a club development seminar next month as has been their norm over the past three years.
