Teen Mohammed is top woman cricketer
ANISA MOHAMMED, the 14-year-old spinner who created a big stir on the local women’s cricketing scene was adjudged Cricketer of the Year by the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s Cricket Board. The teen got the award at the TTWCB annual awards dinner at ALGICO Building, St Vincent Street, Port-of-Spain, on Saturday night. Mohammed won the hearts of local cricket fans after her excellent performances with the ball for both the Trinidad and Tobago Senior and Under-23 teams. She was also selected on the West Indies team for the World Cup qualifying tournament in Holland, and there, had the outstanding figures of 10-6-4-1 against Japan. Mohammed made it a double when she was also named Most Improved Player. Other national cricketers of the year were Shane DeSilva, Felicia Cummings, Nelly Williams and Stephanie Power.
Delivering the feature address was First Lady Jean Ramjohn-Richards who was made the patron of the TTWCB. She called on the women to demand a place on the cricketing landscape and don’t just allow the men to be recognised. Mrs Richards also congratulated the women board for their exceptional work in schools, which she said was important to the social fabric of the country. “With crime the way it is now we must halt the destruction of our progeny.“It makes me happy when I see the programmes that you have in the schools and this is great. “We have to do our part as elders in order to ensure that our future generation is in good stead.” The first lady ended by saying: “Don’t ever underestimate the ability of women. “I believe in you women and I am looking forward to the day when women’s cricket is on par with men’s cricket.” Board president Gayle Daniel-Worrell in a vibrant address told the gathering that women’s cricket in Trinidad and Tobago is on the rise and that the public has to move away from the thought that cricket in the West Indies belongs to the boys and men. Worrell said her executive has been working very hard to promote and develop the game and this culminated with the two titles Trinidad and Tobago won this year. Trinidad and Tobago last achieved the double in 1996.
