Nixon back in national squad

FORMER Switzerland-based striker Jerren Nixon is back in the national squad for today’s friendly against Cuba at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 5 pm.

Nixon along with ex-Under 23 striker Kevin Jeffrey who had a successful stint with Richmond Kickers in the American A-league, have both been recalled to national duty by Trinidad and Tobago coach Stuart Charles Fevrier. Fevrier’s team comprises only locally-based professionals. Both Nixon and Jeffrey are members of local prorofessional team North East Stars. Also earning recalls are CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh defenders Cyd Gray and Ian Gray, and Vibe CT 105 W Connection midfielder Kerwyn “Hardest” Jemmott. Strikers Nigel “Pistol” Pierre and Cornell Glen of CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh could also prove a useful duo in the TT attack.

Promising Starworld Strikers’ Bevon Lewis was also drafted into the national squad for today’s game. Fevrier made it clear that he wanted to see how well a squad of locally-based players can cope against formidable opposition like Cuba, who knocked the Trinidad and Tobago senior team out of this year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup with a come from behind 3-1 win  at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium earlier this year. From his Birmingham, England base, national striker Stern John said: “While I will not be there for the game I am hoping that the team can put on a good showing in front of the home fans. It is important that we get our shape because the qualifiers are coming soon.”

The national U-23 squad: Nigel Daniel (Jabloteh), Silvio Spann, Jan Michael Williams, Kenwyne Jones (W Connection), Ronald Primus (Jabloteh), Glenton Wolfe (North East Stars), Kevin Graham, Devon Caseman (Joe Public), Devon Mitchell (Jabloteh), Jason Marcano (W Connection) , Kerry Baptiste, Josh Johnson, Michael Celestine (Jabloteh), Lyndon Diaz ( W Connection), Errol Charles (Starworld Strikers), Kevon Carter (Defence Force), Kevon Clement (SWIF), Kendall Davis (W Connection).
