Khan: great opportunity for Mohammed
TRINIDAD and Tobago cricket team manager Omar Khan believes that left arm unorthodox spinner Dave Mohammed will perform very well for the West Indies in South Africa.
Speaking to Newsday yesterday Khan said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Dave, especially after the trials he had earlier this year.” Mohammed was involved in a rape accusation in Grenada earlier this year but was found not guilty. Khan who has been a mentor to Mohammed and has been at his side since he joined PowerGen Cricket Club believes that he will do very well in South Africa. “With his unique brand of bowling Dave Mohammed will perform well in South Africa. He leaves little room for mistakes from the batsmen and this will make him very dangerous down there. “As you know he is an excellent fielder and has a lot of potential with the bat. All this will work in his favour when it comes to team selection and he now has a great opportunity to do the stuff at the Test level.”
Since joining PowerGen five years ago Mohammed has been a standout cricketer and Khan together with the company have taken a keen interest in his development. When he was dropped from the national team a year ago, PowerGen hired former Test player Raphick Jumadeen to work with Mohammed to improve his bowling, and he is a much more disciplined bowler for it. Khan said: “We have always been very close and I spent a lot of time trying to mould a disciplined, well-rounded young man. “We at PowerGen and PowerGen Sports Club are very proud of Dave Mohammed and we are definitely looking forward to him doing us proud when he wears the West Indian colours in South Africa.”
